Waste into Fuel
Kimball International's manufacturing plants reduce use of fossil fuels by burning sawdust waste to heat production facilities. |
These Significant Environmental Aspects include projects such as re-lamping production and warehouse areas with T-5 and T-8 lamps, replacement of natural gas ovens with sensor controlled electric Halogen ovens, replacement of 35 year-old natural gas boilers with state-of-the-art space heaters, and replacing old air compressors with energy efficient units.
Kimball long ago adopted the Waste-to-Energy practice of incinerating waste products to generate steam, heat or electricity. The Company uses wood scraps and sawdust generated by its manufacturing processes as fuel to provide heat for production facilities. Wood fuel is a renewable energy source and has been detemined to have a lower Greenhouse Gas emission than fossil fuel.
NOF Light Sensors Conserve Energy and Reduce Costs
As part of their "Lean & Green" efforts, NOF installed light sensors in the open areas of their headquarters building in Jasper. The lights in the open areas automatically shut off at 8:30 p.m. on the first floor and 8:00 p.m. on the second floor, and remain off until 6:00a.m. If needed during these times, employees can turn on the lights in the open areas of the building. Once the lights are on, an automatic timer will shut them off every sixty minutes. Utilizing these light sensors saves energy and money, supporting the philosophy that nickels and dimes add up to dollars.
Every NOF and Kimball International employee understands and accepts that he or she must do everything possible to reduce unnecessary waste to protect our environment, wisely use our resources and aid the Company's profitability.
Other Energy Reduction Activities:
• Programable Thermostats installed in conference rooms
• Energy Star vending machines installed in some locations
• Vending Miser units added to existing vending machines to lower energy use
• Motion Controls placed on lighting in restrooms, breakrooms and common areas
• Exit Signs replaced with LED versions to lower energy use
